This month we got that wonderful jar of chalkboard paint in the mixed media add on. I love this paint. I have already used it on several layouts. However I got to thinking, how else can I use this paint?

Chalkboard anything is a HUGE trend right now. You know what else is a HUGE trend right now, Mason jars. So why not combine the two? Then throw in a bit of Halloween. This is what I came up with, and I will walk you thru my process.

      [img:width=600&height=516]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414756802_131_FT0_img_8761_.jpg[/img]

First thing you need to do is gather your supplies. I got that cute little wood coffin at M's for .49, isn't it the cutest?

      [img:width=600&height=400]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414756854_131_FT0_img_8600.jpg[/img]

Next we need to do some painting. We are going to paint the lid of the mason jar with our Chalkboard paint. The paint is going to streak in places, don't worry, it doesn't need to be totally covered. We are also going to paint our mason Jar. The first coat of paint will also be streaky. Again don't worry we will be applying a second coat of paint to the mason jar. Once these are painted set them aside to dry.

      [img:width=600&height=400]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414757206_131_FT0_img_8605.jpg[/img]

      [img:width=600&height=631]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414757235_131_FT0_img_8615.jpg[/img]

Next we are going to work on that cute little coffin. To color it I started off with distress ink in gathered twigs (how appropriate for our little graveyard top we are creating). Just take the ink pad and drag it over the coffin front, back, sides, top and bottom. It will end up looking like this.

      [img:width=600&height=512]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414757512_131_FT0_img_8637.jpg[/img]

It will be streaky, which is a good thing. Take your distress tool and fill in those areas that didn't get covered to you liking. You are also going to do the inside edges. When you are finished your coffin should look something like this (so will your hands when you are done with this part, LOL).

      [img:width=489&height=600]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414757704_131_FT0_img_8645.jpg[/img]

      [img:width=600&height=570]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414757728_131_FT0_img_8642.jpg[/img]

Ok, so our coffin looks a little too new to be hangin out in our graveyard. Time to grunge it up a bit. I grabbed some rub n buff in spanish copper (from a past kit) and silver leaf. I just randomly rubbed some over the coffin with my fingers until I was happy with the way it looked. The spanish copper gave it a darker finish and the silver leaf gave it that much needed aged look.

      [img:width=600&height=507]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414758023_131_FT0_img_8648.jpg[/img]

Ok, we still aren't done with our coffin. I grabbed my crackle stencil (from a past kit) and some grayish/black shimmerz paste and randomly did some stenciling. Since the back will be showing, don't forget to give it the same amount of love that you give the front.

      [img:width=600&height=474]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414758243_131_FT0_img_8661.jpg[/img]

      [img:width=600&height=523]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414758271_131_FT0_img_8663.jpg[/img]

I set that aside to dry. The mason jar needs another coat of Chalkboard paint. As you apply another coat of paint to the mason jar you may find some of the first layer peels off a bit. Don't worry my dahlings, that will be perfectly fine. Once you have finished your second coat of Chalkboard paint, set the mason jar aside to dry.
      [img:width=356&height=600]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414758600_131_FT0_img_8686.jpg[/img]

Time to work on the lid. Grab some burlap cord and the lid. You will also need some clear glue or a glue that dries clear.
      [img:width=600&height=438]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414758703_131_FT0_img_8689.jpg[/img]

We are going to wrap this around the the outside of the lid. That's why it didn't matter that the paint job wasn't perfect. Most of it will be hidden anyway.
      [img:width=600&height=489]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414759061_131_FT0_img_8701.jpg[/img]

Next, take the center piece of the lid and hot glue it in place. You need this to be completely stable, as it will be the foundation for our graveyard.
      [img:width=600&height=523]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414759316_131_FT0_img_8706.jpg[/img]

Time to start embellishing and building the graveyard. Back to our coffin, it needs a few more things. I added a skull and crossbones metal piece to the outside. To make it a bit more creepy, I decide to have it open a wee bit in the grave yard. I added some cheesecloth on the inside with some hanging out on the side.

      [img:width=600&height=401]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414759586_131_FT0_img_8714.jpg[/img]
      [img:width=349&height=600]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414759678_131_FT0_img_8717.jpg[/img]

To build the foundation for our coffin, I used some floral moss, and some black netting (from a past kit). take the moss and mix in some distressed netting and hot glue it to the top pf the lid. This doesn't have to be neat or perfectly placed. It actually should look random and messy.
      [img:width=600&height=501]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414760279_131_FT0_img_8731.jpg[/img]

Once that is all set, hot glue your coffin in place. The add a few more embellishments. I added a black velvet flower and a 3D headstone sticker.
      [img:width=400&height=600]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414760687_131_FT0_img_8732.jpg[/img]

Time to finish off our mason jar and put this all together. Grab your dried mason jar and your distress tool. You are going to randomly distress(remove) some of the chalkboard paint off of the jar (don't remove too much).
      [img:width=600&height=515]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414760837_131_FT0_img_8750.jpg[/img]

      [img:width=600&height=513]/wp-content/uploads/2014/1414760881_131_FT0_img_8755.jpg[/img]

Then I added a battery operated candle (get the ones with an orange glow) and screwed the lid on. Here is the final product.

Whew! This seem like a lot of work, let me tell you the hardest part was letting everything dry. I had so much fun making these. I hope you give it a try. These don't have to be just for Halloween.

I hope you enjoyed my idea on what something fun to do with the chalkboard paint. Thank you for letting me share this with you. Happy Halloween!!

"Some cars look like they're going fast when they're standing still. The Camaro looks like it's going to beat you unconscious, put you in a silly hat, invite a couple of other Camaros over to take photos of you, then e-mail them to all your friends and co-workers. Call me crazy, but I like that in a car."
